Up and around Pen-y-ghent.

Wednesday 8 July.

Today we first had a look around the old Norman church at Horton before setting out on our climb. The weather was sunny but Pen-y-ghent was shrouded in low cloud. (NB. The church photograph below was taken at 5.30pm after the weather cleared. Pen-y-ghent is visible in the background.)

I
The view looking back to Horton-in-Ribblesdale, note the low cloud, which we entered as we climbed higher.

Shiel having a rest on the way up. Note the angle of the dry stone wall. It is quite a steep climb.
The picture below was taken looking up towards the summit. Two people, one in red, can just be seen heading down. The poor visibility had some benefits.Shiel and I suffer from vertigo but were OK as we couldn't see how far the fall was.
We eventually reached the trig. point on the summit and here are the pictures to prove it! There is a very effective summit shelter. It was very, very windy today. Strangely the wind was not as fierce at the summit as it was where we first met the Pennine Way.There the wind was frighteningly strong.

On the way down we met a group of people with a woman in an all terrain vehicle. She said it was designed to give disabled people access to areas they wouuld not normally be able to visit. She was really excited and enjoying ever minute of the adventure.
