Day7: Burnley to Rishton.

Monday 13 July.

We were off by 9am today for what turned out to be a 6 hour walk, mostly in light rain. A typical Lancashire summer's day. ( Well I was born in Yorkshire!)

We went back up to the end of the M65 aqueduct and continued our walk south west. We soon encountered the Gannow tunnel and so we had to divert up hill to cross a major road interchange. The signs ran out and we had to ask our way at one point. Shortly after we reached the west portal of the tunnel we were walking under 2 massive new bridges for the M65 and the A671.

A little further on light rain started. Initially I avoided putting on waterproofs but as the drizzle turned to rain there was not much choice. Shiel covered up,
and even the sheep took shelter, but the horses didn't seem to mind the rain.
One thing that struck us today was traffic noise, particularly from the M65, and traffic density. We came off the canal at Clsyton-le-Moor for lunch and had great difficulty crossing the road. England is over populated. Green belt is being gobbled up by housing. I took this photo of houses just waiting to dash down the hill and take over the paddocks.
Although the canal walk still had a very rural outlook there was a lot of litter today, reminiscent of the outskirts of Leeds. This was made worse by the people cutting the grass beside the canal! They didn't remove the litter first, they just shredded it! Sad, as otherwise they were doing a good job.

Today we passed the half way mark on the canal walk. It is literally all down hill from here! We don't remember passing a lock all day, but we did see a few swing bridges, some sheltering sheep, as bridge 115, above.
Near this milepost we came across the more alarming sign shown below and were glad when we again crossed over the M65 to eventually reach our hotel  NE  of Rishton. We had windows to close!
