Horton-in-Ribblesdale to Ribblehead

Tuesday 7 July

Today our plan was to head north, on the Pennine Way, to Cam End and then take the Dales way and road down to Ribblehead and the railway viaduct.

We went wrong almost immediately. We took the Pennine Way heading south! We had been walking more than half an hour before we twigged.

The fact that we were heading towards Pen-y-ghent should have been a clue!!! Luckily for us, just before we decided to turn back, we came upon a very new track, not on our maps. There is a '3 Peaks' track heading West. We took this as it linked up to the Pennine Way heading North.
On '3 Peaks' track looking back towards Pen-y-ghent and below looking west towards the Pennine Way and Cam End.
The day started overcast, but there were more bright periods later in the day. During one such spell we arrived at the bridge over Cam Beck.
The area before Cam End was moorland
and more moorland (note same sheep.)
We eventually reached the Dale's Way, which we took down to Ribblehead and the viaduct. The viaduct can just be seen in the 2 photographs below. (The second a blow up of the first.) It was sunny when we reached the viaduct, but sadly my cell camera battery had died. The viaduct  is an impressive sight closeup.
We had tea in a very informative tea rooms at the Ribblehead railway station (there was a permanent railway exhibition next door) and then caught a train back to Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Steam trains run on this bit of the main line twice a week at this time of year.
