Day 5: Gargrave to Barnoldswick.

Saturday 11 July.

Our earliest start of the walk today. It was warm with some cloud as we joined the canal, on a comparatively short walk to Barnoldswick. The idea was to get to our B&B (pub.) around 2 pm so Frau Barr could watch the tennis from Wimbledon.

After the previous 'canal day', with no locks all the way to Gargave, we passed 3 locks in quick succession today. We also had a short sharp shower of rain, for which we donned waterproofs, but within 10 minutes we were taking them off again.

We were walking  cross country and for a while the towpath ran with the Pennine Way. I had seen the double arched bridge twice previously on PW walks.

We also met up with the Pendle Way for a while.
Just before Barnoldswick we stopped at a small tea rooms, Lock Stop, to have tea and scones. They also had a good selection of homemade cakes. We were joined by two red robins that obviously knew the place well. We have no red robins in NZ so it was good to see one again. We also saw a pair of swans, this time with only 8 cygnets. Still a pretty good score! Shortly afterwards we entered Barnoldwick with some very well maintained gardens beside the canal. Some others not so good.
