Settle to Gargrave.

Friday 10 July.

We left our B&B at 9:36am on a warm and sunny morning. We passed an interesting church on our left with a side turret off the main tower. Must go back and revisit sometime. The town was packed with motor vehicles and the roads were very busy. They spoilt the appearance of what is probably a nice small country town.

There was a flowerpot festival in progress, similar to the scarecrow festival I saw when I was walking JOGLE. I've included pictures of 3 of the displays  I saw to give you an idea.I particularly like the 'Shaun the Sheep.'

We took a short steep hill, 1in 5, out of Settle. The road was narrow and quite busy. You can see the view back to Settle below.
This road crosses the Pennine Bridleway.  Shortly afterwards we turned off to the right (south), first onto a walled lane, which then downgraded to a simple path. The first photo shows a view to the side of  path, note the dry stone wall. The next shows the path itself.
Shortly before Otterburn we walked through a small forest where we saw two chaps fitting chains to a vehicle with rubber tyres. Compare what you see here to those you fit to go skiing!!!!
From Otterburn we took the road to Bell Busk. It was hot and near lunch time so we stopped to snack on nuts and half a Mars bar. We also took off our socks and aired our feet.
From Bell Busk we first followed a walled track towards Gargrave, We could have taken it all the way to Gargrave but it was a little longer than a path we chose, which ran just to the south of it. They eventually joined up where the walled path was also the Pennine Way, just outside Gargrave. On the early part of the track a few signs had been broken or disfigured but sineage was better nearer Gargrave. Note the useful seat beside the Pennine Way. We nearly missed it, it was so well concealed..
We are now back on the Leeds to Liverpool Canal.
