Thursday 9 July.
We left our B&B, Horton Villa, and set off south, down the main road, past The Golden Lion. We took a minor road, that forked off left, which then became a path down to a small bridge over the river Ribble. After crossing the bridge we were then on the Ribble Way, heading south. We took a final shot of Pen-y-ghent, with its clasic profile.
On reaching Helwith Bridge we went wrong when trying to find a short path to the minor road running south down the Ribble Valley, to the west of the river. We finished up at a flooded quarry, now a fishing lake, and had to back track. We eventually found the road and went up it, from where we took a last photographs back towards Horton. Note the change in profile of Pen-y-ghent from this view point.
Looking south, toward Stainforth, we got the view below.
We turned down from the road into Stainforth where we had lunch at the Craven Heifer and a great view over the Ribble. We chose to take the main road down to Langcliffe, as there was a pavement, but the road was too busy and noisy. We'd advise taking the path up from the LHS of the road. Just before Langcliffe we found a quiet path, on the RHS of the road down to the Ribble with a great view back above Stainforth.
We then found a bridge across the Ribble, near a weir, and continued to Settle on the Ribble Way. It has it's own symbol, an R over a W. The condition of the path deteriorated significantly near some playing fields on the outskirts of Settle as can be seen below.
The penultimate picture is a view north, up the Ribble, from the bridge entering Settle. The final picture was also taken from that location, Bill, Ben, and my sister - Weed.
